Do I Need Protection?

If you are trying to decide if you need protection, you need to evaluate your particular location. Items to consider are height, size, topography, value of your property and even your distance from fire and rescue services. These factors along with the lightning frequency for your area will determine your actual need.

Contrary to popular opinion, don't count on tall trees around the house or your TV antenna to protect you from lightning. If lightning strikes a tree the current may only follow the tree for a short distance before it "jumps". Once it jumps, that charge could go right into your house. TV antennas, even grounded ones, offer little or no protection from lightning. Once lightning hits an antenna, the charge can introduce side-flashing to other grounded metal objects, which can cause the ignition of combustibles.

Each year, thousands of homes and other properties are damaged by lightning causing almost a quarter of a billion dollars of damage annually in the United States. If the property damage and deaths from all the tornadoes, hurricanes and floods were combined, they still would not equal the destruction caused by lightning strikes. If you are concerned about the safety of your home or company, contact us and we'll be happy to examine your property and provide you with an estimate for protection.
